More Interesting Things About This Writer (30 Things)

There is more to me than meets the eye and I don't think I can be accurately summed up in a few words.

Every person on the planet is a complex mess of everything that makes up their personalities. No one quite knows who they are - they have to discover themselves over the course of their lives - so it's no surprise that it is hard to understand people when you see them at a glance. To really know the person, you have to spend time with them, learning who they are and discovering what they have discovered about themselves up till that point. It can be exhausting or fun to get to know someone.

You, my readers, don't know me because the vast majority of you have never met me in real life. I could be anyone beyond this screen; you only know me based on what I write here. But I want to get to know you all better. I might never meet you, so I will never get to know you on a deeper level by spending time with you. But I want you to know me better so I want to show you what I'm like by telling you some interesting things about myself.

I've written something similar to this before, in fact this post is the sequel to that first blog post about me (30 Interesting Things About This Writer), but some time has passed since the last list of interesting facts, and I have grown up a bit since then. These are new things about me that you haven't heard before but, in a sense, this is also the updated version of 30 Interesting Things About This Writer. So what don't you know about me? Quite a bit, actually, because I can't be easily summed up in 30 facts; no one can. But at least this shows you a little bit more about me. So, shall we continue...

1. I graduated this year, along with twelve other homeschooled kids. I got to graduate alongside my younger sister; we always planned to graduate together but it's crazy to think that we've passed that milestone this year.

2. My favorite music artist right now is Aurora, a 24 year old Norwegian singer whose songs fall under the categories of Art Pop, Baroque Pop, and Folktronica. I find her music very calming and thought-provoking. All of Aurora's songs seem like poetry in motions, an aesthetic that I love.

3. I will be turning 20 in a few months.

4. Two recent reads of mine have been The Picture of Dorian Grey and Apostle of Freedom: Thomas Paine. I've always loved history and the writings of Thomas Paine, but his words seem all the more important in our current day and age.

5. My family has five cats. We recently got the fifth one when he (Barnabas) showed up as a stray on our back deck. We brought him inside because he looked cold and hungry and he's been in the house for just over a month.

6. Since my last 30 Things, I have been on a missions trip to Trinidad. That trip was the first time I had ever been out of my country at all, let alone on a missions trip. The week that I  was gone was the best week of my life. I really feel like I grew a lot spiritually, and I was so glad I got the opportunity to learn about a new culture.

7. I have a younger sister who is only eleven and a half months younger than I. We're Irish twins!

8. If I could cosplay as any fictional character, I would go as either Kaori Miyazono from Your Lie in April or Celty Sturlson from Durarara. I have never tried cosplaying, but it seems like a really fun hobby so maybe I'll try it someday.

9. I am a total clean freak. Not Monica from Friends level of clean freak, but I do like the spaces I live in to be tolerably clean. In a way, cleaning is therapeutic for me; there's just something very relaxing about putting a house or even one room in order. I like cleaning so much that I even started a cleaning business.

10. I recently learned to crochet, and I am attempting to make a blanket.

11. I recently quit my job as a lifeguard at the YMCA after working there for just over three years. I really enjoyed my job while I had it; it was my first job and I really appreciate everything I learned and gained from it.

12. After quitting my job, I started my own business. I created a cleaning service that has been very successful during its first few months of existence. I've really enjoy having my own business; I can set my own hours, I'm doing work that I enjoy, and I feel like I'm really doing something unique.

13. I share a birthday with the singer Cher and the actor Jimmy Stewart. My birthday is also the same date as Christopher Columbus' death date.

14. I recently began journaling regularly. While I find it hard to journal sometimes, I think it's very important to document the world from my point of view. Journals are a wonderful way to preserve your inner voice and leave a testament to the world you lived in for the generations to come.

15. I spent some time this year volunteering at a summer camp that I have been going to since I was five. Camp wasn't open as usual, but I helped clean and maintain it anyway. I painted walls, strung electrical wires, dug ditches, and installed wifi routers.

16. I have gone through and studied the Perspectives missions course as part of my final project before I graduated high school. The course is focused on world missions and how every Christian can be a part of God's plan even if they never leave their home towns. The course felt especially impactful after my Trinidad trip. I saw field-missions work firsthand and then I was able to study it at a local level.

17. Before I quit my job at the Y, I was part of the best quick-rescue team and the fastest backboard team at the entire Y in my city. The YMCA lifeguards had an end-of-year test to see who was the best and safest, and my teams and I won by a landslide; we even beat teams of longtime swim team members.

18. A year and a half ago (when I wrote my first 30 Things), I intended to go to Ethnos360 Bible Institute for college. But, as with so many things in 2020 that fell through, I am not currently studying anywhere. While I still hope to get some sort of Bible/Missions degree, I am trusting that God has a plan for this setback and will reveal what he wants me to do in his own perfect timing.

19. I love poetry. I have read many of Emily Dickinson's and Edgar Allen Poe's works, and in recent years I have started writing my own poetry.

20. This year has been a really tough year for me. Nothing has seemed to go right, and I have really struggled with depression and listlessness. I am eternally thankful that I have had my family to help me; they are always there to support me and pull me out of dark places. While I am doing better now, I would have ended up in a much darker place if it hadn't been for my family.

21. One of my greatest writing inspirations is the author and patriot Thomas Paine. His writing and beliefs helped kickstart the American revolution, and he was instrumental in creating the USA. I find it very encouraging that one person with a pen and paper can inspire such a radical change in the world.

22. I love musical theater and have been involved in it for many years. I've had several small chorus parts and, for my senior year, I was backstage manager for a production of Cinderella. I have been involved in ten musicals.

23. I use to be a gymnast when I was younger. I took classes for many years and was actually pretty good, but I decided to quit when I started getting taller.

24. After I quit gymnastics, I took a crack at swim team. I only stayed on the team for one practice because I didn't like how intense all the other team members were, but it helped me become a lifeguard a few years later.

25. Two of my favorite songs lately have been "Wildflowers" by Elle Fanning and "Riptide" by Vance Joy. These songs really resonate with me because they have a simple let powerful feeling.

26. I have a very complicated personality. I am actually a very friendly person, but I have to trust a person before I will open up. Sometimes this gives people the impression that I am shy or antisocial, but that's not the case; I am just very comfortable with my close group of friends, and I value loyal long-lasting friendships over passing acquaintances.

27. I have never been in a bad car accident, though I was involved in a minor fender-bender last year. A car behind me failed to stop and rear-ended me. The accident turned into a hit-and-run after the offending driver ran from the scene; she didn't even stop to see if I was okay. This happened about two years, shortly after I got my driver's license.

28. Sine my last post of 30 Things, I have become a diehard anime fan. While some people may have watched more, I can now say that I've watched 33 anime series (some more than once) and 32 anime movies (mostly Ghibli but many other studios too). My favorite anime voice actor is Steve Blum. He did the dubbing for two of my favorite anime characters. (Can you guess which ones?)

29. If I were to recommend an anime to someone, I would recommend Your Lie in April. It was the first anime I watched, and even though it is emotionally taxing, it is a good series to start off with.

30. My favorite Studio Ghibli movie is Spirited Away. The movie actually came out the same year I was born, but I didn't see it till I was 14. The movie is good on its own, but it also holds a very dear place in my heart because it was the first thing that introduced me to Japan and that country's need for the message of the gospel.

Now you know some more interesting facts about me, did you learn something new? What fact surprised you the most? Did you ever think that I was such a complex person?

This is why I like getting to know people through questions and fun facts about them; you learn things that you never would have guessed from a first impression. People are so wonderfully complicated; they're a wonder to discover.

30 Random Things about This Writer

I've been writing for almost five years now and posting my work on this blog almost as long. I've tried many different styles of writing in many different genres - poetry, short stories, and essays. It's been an incredible journey that hasn't ended yet, and you, my faithful readers, have been on this journey with me the entire time. You have no idea how encouraging it is to see how many of you read my work, and from all over the world no less. Your faithful reading has kept me going and I do hope that my writing has kept you reading.

It dawned on me the other day that even though dozens of people read my work and hopefully enjoy it, not many of you know about me, the author behind the words. To many I'm just a picture or the words I write. So I thought I would introduce myself. Below are 30 random facts about me and a few stories from my life. I hope this makes me a little more real and makes you smile.

1. I am currently 17 years old and live in the same city that I was born in. I've never moved in my life.

2. I used to be ambidextrous but then picked my right hand.

3. I took dance for 10 years, from six different schools. While I tried a lot of styles, I liked ballet the most. I got far enough in ballet that I was beginning pointe work when I quit.

4. From the age of seven to thirteen I was afraid of going to see a movie in the theater. I have very sensitive hearing and, even with ear plugs in, the surround-sound was too loud. I also didn't like waiting for something scary to happen on a huge screen.

5. If I could meet a historical figure, it would be Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, or Emily Bronte.

6. I love old TV shows. I've watched every episode of 21 Jump Street, Gilligan's Island, The Cosby Show, and Rocky and Bullwinkle, and I've seen most of Bonanza, M.A.S.H., Trapper John MD, and The Waltons.

7. I have a pin collection. I have 25 little pins and two giant ones, including four Batman pins, three X-Men pins, one Vote for President pin, and one Bigfoot Exists pin.

8. My favorite season is Autumn, followed closely by Winter.

9. I have never broken a bone even though I was a very active and reckless kid. I did twist my knee a couple years ago and it still gives me problems occasionally, but it's not debilitating.

10. I've been playing piano for 10 years. I am still currently playing and plan to continue till at least my senior year of high school. I've gotten firsts in Class C and Class B in Solo & Ensemble.

11. I like anime. I'm nowhere near a diehard fan but I like the art style and some of the stories. Interesting side fact: I hate action anime and much prefer slice of life. My favorite slice of life anime is Your Lie in April.

12. I LOVE reading! I am never without a book of some sort, and most of the time it's a classic. I own over one hundred books and have read almost that many.

13. I have read a lot of classic books, including Wuthering Heights, Dracula, A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities, and Fahrenheit 451.

14. I volunteer at my church a lot. I'm in the nursery at least once a month and I'm on tech team to run slides for music and the sermon once or twice a month.

15. My favorite movies are Beautiful Fantastic and Carry Pilby. I like these movies because the main characters of both love to read and are a little eccentric, two qualities I see in myself.

16. Christmas is my favorite holiday. I love the atmosphere around it and all the happiness it brings. Every year I go all-out when decorating even if my family thinks it's a little obnoxious.

17. I have never dyed my hair in my life. While it's gotten darker naturally, my hair as always been my natural color.

18. My favorite fall activities are picking apples and carving pumpkins.

19. I lost all my baby teeth pretty quickly once they started getting loose. I was so impatient with the last one that I pulled it out the second it became loose.

20. Up until recently, I would have a cream cheese bagel every day for lunch.

21. If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would go to Japan. I love the atmosphere and culture, and everything is such an interesting mix of a million different things. If all goes as planned, I will be going to Japan after college.

22. While I am still a student now, I will be graduating in about a year and a half. Afterwards, I'm planning to go to New Tribes Mission School and after that becoming a full-time missionary.

23. I love ballet, specifically watching ballet. My favorite production is Giselle by the Dutch National Ballet. My favorite ballet dancers are Natalia Osipova and Carlos Acosta.

24. I am an ambivert. While I like my space and recharge at home, I love people and like getting to know them.

25. I'm a lifeguard and I just celebrated my one year anniversary of getting certified and getting my first job. It's a fun job and I wouldn't mind doing it for a few more years.

26. I hate coffee. It smells and tastes gross to me and I don't like the idea of being dependent on anything to function in the morning.

27. I am a night owl. I am able to get up early enough for my homeschool lessons, but I'm much more alert and motivated to work at night. A lot of my early blog posts were worked on at night.

28. My personal goal in life is to make a lasting difference. I don't want to be forgotten or become just another face in a crowd, so I try to make the most of my time and feel rewarded if I'm able to help someone.

29. I have never had a boyfriend.

30. My favorite Bible verse is Matthew 28:20, "...Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

I hoped you enjoyed this little dive into my life. I certainly wouldn't be who I am today, with all these quirks, if I hadn't gone through trials, hard times, and life-changing events. And while nothing tragic has ever happened in my life, I'm proud to say I made it through some really trying times. But I didn't do it alone; throughout my entire life God, has always been with me and he has helped me no matter the circumstances, my attitude, or the place I'm at. As a bonus fact about me, I'm a Christian and have been since I was five years old. While I'm not perfect, I cherish the idea that God has made me perfect in him. To all my readers, God has helped me and he can help you too; you just need to reach for him.

Thank you to everyone again for supporting me and continuing to read my work. As always, I remain your humble writer,

Rachel

Spilling Ink - A Book Review

I rarely write book reviews, because I rarely come across a book that I think deserves recognition. But I have recently finished a book that I think is worthy, so here's my candid opinion.

Have you ever wanted to write a book, an adventure story, a heartfelt poem? Have you ever tried? You sat down at your desk, picked up your pencil, poised it over the paper, and then with a jolt you realize you don't know how to "properly write a story!" Now, in my opinion, there is no right or wrong way to write; you just need to reach down deep inside of yourself and find the words you need. But if you really want to know the "right" way to put those words on paper, then there's a book for that; Spilling Ink, A Young Writer's Handbook by Anne Mezer and Ellen Potter, is a perfect place to start. This book is not only a great start but it is also a great way to keep going if you are getting discouraged in your own writing. And it might just give you some new ideas that you never would have thought of before.

I really enjoyed this book; it was fun and lighthearted while still giving some great insights. Even though the book is targeted at younger readers and potential writers, I thought that any writer of any age would enjoy it. The writing is easy to follow and keeps you turning the pages to read the next line. The chapters were also divided into manageable sizes that are easy to read anywhere. Even though it is a "how to write properly" book, the authors themselves continually say that writing the right way isn't as important as writing the way that you feel comfortable; I thought that was really nice and encouraging to young writers who are just starting out. I would definitely recommend this book to any beginning writers and I think even experienced writers should give this book at try; it could give them a hand, too.

Never give up on writing; never deprive the world of your words.

Page

The blank page - a writer's dilemma and worst nightmare, a bright, crisp sheet that is always a daunting task for the lonely person who sits in front of it with a pencil poised. Though this sheet is such a small space in the vast world, the sheer blankness of it can envelop the writer in one instant.

Such is the author's lonely lot - to fill this unfilled space of clean whiteness that seems to reach and stretch to oblivion. One would very well think that the writer would turn from her task and leave this blank page forever, abandoning it to time to collect dust without a single pencil mark on it. But for this very reason the author cannot turn away or cease to write, for in some way she is eternally linked to the blank page; it is her sole purpose as an author. It is part of her; she must fill the page.

It is her calling to fill all of the page, but, lo, the completion of one page only opens the way for another blank sheet. This is an author's lot, this never-ending stream of blankness never fully satisfied or finished. And yet so many travel down this path of blank pages and poised pencils; many try to fill the pages with their words. Oh, so many try.

But it takes a special person to truly fill a page. So many write words of grandeur and pomp, but there is no gravity in them so they are resigned to the great pile of lonely words written but meaning nothing. A true author's words must flow from the heart and not solely her mind.

Then there is the reason. A true author does not mind the never-ending pile of pages no matter how blank because it is all worth it; no matter the disappointments or the loneliness, the author knows that she is meant to be writing because the blank page is where she belongs.
