Valkyrie

With a blade in each hand dripping blood and gore,
And her white silken dress soaking up and trailing the same,

She walked through carnage towards a hazy orange sunrise.

A veritable Valkyrie of grief,
Wreathed in her own brimstone.

Arrival

The Summer clouds run hurried,
Ahead of the encroaching frosted wind.
And two old beach chairs sit neglected in the yard,
Ready for another bracing winter.

Slippers find their way out,
From underneath the bed.
To be forgotten for a moment in Indian Summer,
But most assuredly...Autumn has arrived.

Needles

A little seamstress from Leningrad,
Clutched a pack of needles as she died.

Pricks for the soul,
In a soulless age.
And a small Hail Mary in Russian tongue,
As explosions sunder the sky outside.

Frogs

Frogs in the evening,
Mid August, cool skies,
As thunder rolls over the trees.

Yellow street lamps,
And a far away car,
Summer's entirety draws to a close.

The Bride

Born of fire, pride, and lust,
This woman comes to live.
Upon the earth that buried her,
By one man and creature saved.

Dusty dark and learning anew,
The fluttery feeling of a heart.
She looks upon the ruin of opulence,
And screams for primal fear.

A jolt, a lurch inhuman gate,
A child learning to walk.
And yet also too quickly thrust,
Into the arms of a knight with killer hands.

Rush

Fallowing gold,
Leaves shiver upon the bow,
As Autumn approaches in a silent rush.

August River

Fog rolling in on a mid August river,
With herons and gulls floating low overhead.

A hazed orange sun hangs suspended in a slow inevitable drop,
And drips upon the water in a golden tear.

A breath, a whisper, the future, forever.
This moment is all and none.

The Road

Dusty road and sun,
Stretch out for miles before us.

Brand new rings for show,
On fingers too young.

But life calls and hope persists.
Dumb young love sails on.

Fawn

The mother deer is weeping for her fawn,
Murdered upon the pavement.

Struck by a car yesterday because,
The driver figured it was no great loss.

Sprawled on the side of the road,
In a beautiful forever repose.

Life was short,
But I've a hunch, worthwhile.

Summer Storm, Rolling In

I watched a summer storm roll in...

Lightening strikes near by in the quickly seceding sky,
The river water is choppy,
And a little girl swings higher,
Than she's ever gone before.

The whispering trees shiver with dark blue behind them,
Thunder rumbles.
Skin pricks up in the presence of gathering electricity,
And the sun dies for an afternoon.

A pure white gull circles in protest,
The wind is crying rain.
Mountainous black clouds roil over the horizon,
And a single gasp signals the plunge.

Sea and Stars

We are oceans and stars colliding.

Deep and dark...full of regrets,
Lofty and sparkling...with endless infinity.

Waves

The waves envelope me...completely and utterly,
But I do not fear them.

Instead I embrace the comfort of deep blue,
Strong rushing arms and the silence whisper...

                                                             ...

...of fathoms upon fathoms to hold me.

Death on the Road

I met death today,
Standing on the side of the road.

He looked at me with eyes of amber,
And said "I'm not here for you."

Instead "The World is so beautiful...
That I take just one moment to experience it.

So when it's all over I can remind man,
Why life was worth while.

European Summer

Europe, last day here.

I walked to a grocery store,

And basked in late sun.

Applesauce

My mother made applesauce,
With fruit fresh from the tree.
Crisp and biting the smell conjured up,
The season's makeup in a moment.

Golden leaves

and ghostly branches,

The old river

and Thanksgiving Day.

Moth balled sweaters,

Hot chocolate foam.

Bright white full moons and

the cozy shuttering of windows.

...

Warm gloves,

Dried root cellar vegetables,

Window frost,

...

A breezy afternoon full of colors

and the rain.

The apples filled the kitchen with a warm whispering steam,
And my nose itched from spices and soap.
Those were the happiest days,
Applesauce days...

...mid Autumn.

Ghost

I

enjoy

existing

as

a

ghost

but,

occasionally,

I

would

like

to

meet

someone

who

sees

spirit

Poet's Mind

I've a poet's mind,
In a body burdened by the modern ideal.

Rather...

Give me ocean waves and garden paths,

Give me dappled sun and love that lasts.

A swallow's call in the early morn,

And the sweet silence of a summer's eve.

The salt of rain upon my brow,

And star filled midnights that breath a wish.

A blade of grass and spider's web,

The heartbeat of a love beneath my ear.

The gentle rise of a soft red sun,

The sudden rupture of a silent storm.

A whispered poem and dew dappled lawn,

And the first breath of Spring within long waiting lungs.

Give me the world in all its minute,
For my mind is made of existence and moments most dear.

The Hush

The hush of a college commons,
Late on a Wednesday night.
Is held by steady breathing,
And the soft falling snow outside.

A world of its own making,
Made up of quite minds.
A feeling of focused melancholy,
And the anticipation of homebound trips.

A week before Christmas break,
A holy calm ensues.
The hush of a college commons,
Filled with the hopeful few.

Summer and Autumn

Autumn's glassy fingers have come over the sun,
And rush to wave good bye
To his love, the Summer, as she slips away.

Allow them an embrace of chilly warmth at the horizon.

Summer flees the chill of her love,
Though his embrace is crisp and dear of old.
A parting caress is all she can give his cheek - stay...

"Until next year my beloved."

Winter Mist

Morning mist on a February day.
Floats in the air like a bride's gauzy vail,
And strings glittering dew on the tall silent grass.
A soft blanket for winter's spring.
